String’s the Thing started with one man’s passion for inspiring youth to pursue music becoming a reality. James Clarkson started his career teaching private lessons here in the Central Texas area. Currently, he has over 10 years of experience teaching in elementary, middle and high school throughout the KISD school district. Coupled with this, he also has 20 plus years of experience with musical private tutoring for youth in Copperas Cove, Temple, Belton and Cameron. During his time teaching in schools and with his private lessons, he has had great success in helping his students succeed in both Region Orchestra and Solo & Ensemble groups. Outside of his passion for teaching, James has also had great success in his own personal musical career. He has experience playing in a wide variety of different events, including but not limited to weddings, community and church events, business conferences and private dinners.
His mission, and the mission of String’s the Thing, is to inspire youth and to make string instruments a priority in the community. By doing this, we hope to help create options for youth in order to help them build character and confidence. With our group sessions, we aim to help our students get involved with the community by setting up small, seasonal concerts at the end of each of our 12-week sessions. Through our private lessons, we aim to help give youth a way to express themselves in a healthy and safe way.

Our vision for the future is to be able to expand and start a community based Youth Orchestra that will perform at different events around town throughout the year, in order to help youth in the area become more involved in their community. Along with Violin and Viola, we would also like to be able to offer both group and private lessons to other string based instruments.
